For the last couple of years I have been tempted to do NaNoWriMo. This is National Novel Writing Month, in which the aim is to write a complete novel in a month. By writing about 1700 words a day you have a reasonable length text in 30 days.
I don’t think I will be managing it this year. I think I need to do MyNoFiMo instead. That’s My Novel Finishing Month. My novel is still sat at about the 36,000 word mark, where it has been for over a year now. It sort of took a back seat when we thought that Mr PC was being made redundant and we had to get the house ready to put on the market. Now the house is decorated. I am still doing plenty of other things, but I could fit in MyNoFiMo if I tried. 1000 words a day for a month would do it. That would get my first draft complete, and then I’d be able to say, ‘Yes, I’ve written a novel’.
Not that it would go any further, of course. Perhaps I’m being too self critical, and obviously I only have works that have made it to publication to compare with, but I don’t think my writing makes the grade. I won’t be inflicting it on anyone else! Just the knowledge that I can do it, that I can stick at something long enough to actually achieve a set target (despite every teacher I ever had telling me how lazy I was), would be enough!
OK, target for November, 1000 words per day.
