We Have a Shop!

I have been virtuous and busy this month. I have been very good at doing most of the things I set out to do, and keeping up with things so that nothing has got to the panicked and urgent stage. The downside is, that I have been lax at recording it all. I have loads to blog about, but have neglected to do so.

The most important thing locally, is that we have a shop in our village. This is a hugely important thing. When we moved here, we thought nothing of the fact there was a shop. Of course there was a shop. This is a busy village, with two pubs, a restaurant, a doctor’s surgery and a bus route. And a shop.

Just over a year ago, the shop closed. That meant our nearest stack of newspapers was a five mile round trip. The old owners had been trying to sell the shop as a going concern for a long time, but in the end they just moved. They couldn’t put their lives on hold waiting for a buyer any more. There was a huge risk at that point that it would be a permanent closure. Someone would buy it, and get permission to make it purely residential. It has happened in villages all over the country.

Thankfully, that hasn’t happened here. We have new shop owners, and on Saturday they opened. The shop was absolutely crammed full of people, local people delighted to have a shop again. We were there too, with our kids spending their pocket money on the sweets from jars. We are determined now, to use our local shop. We want it to succeed, and we want it to be here for a long time.

I am so looking forward to them getting their bread from the artisan breadmaker (who unfortunately was on holiday for the opening day). I was also delighted to see the lovely dressers which I expect will be holding cakes once the tea-shop side of the business opens in a couple of weeks. I will also be letting them know everything I use regularly that I can’t get at Aldi (strong flour, yeast, lentils, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda) so if they stock those six items, I might only have to go to Morrisons once every six months or so. Actually, just the first three would achieve that.

Getting a shop back in town is big news! Event though we have lots (and lots, and lots) of shopping options, we really love the smaller, local owned places. Our butcher and baker are fantastic.
